Maine is the northeasternmost state in the United States — a rugged, sparsely populated land of 3,500 miles of coastline (more than California), dense boreal forest, granite mountains, and the coldest, clearest Atlantic waters in the continental US. It is the only US state that borders just one other state (New Hampshire), and its largest city, Portland, has a population of only 68,000 — making Maine one of the least urbanized states in the country by the proportion of its population living in small towns and rural areas. The state's economy and identity are deeply tied to the sea — lobstering, fishing, boatbuilding, and the tourism that the coast attracts.

Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island is the centerpiece of Maine tourism — the only national park in New England, named the 'Crown Jewel of the North Atlantic Coast' by the National Park Service, and consistently ranked in the top 10 most visited parks in the US. Acadia recorded 4,042,403 visits through October 2025 — a 3.2% increase over the same period in 2024, with August 2025 the busiest month since 1989. Cadillac Mountain's summit drive requires a timed reservation during peak season. Sand Beach was named among America's best beaches to visit in 2026 by Condé Nast Traveller. A new Acadia Gateway Center in Trenton opened in fall 2025, with the free Island Explorer shuttle connecting to Bar Harbor and the Park Loop Road.

Maine beyond Acadia is equally compelling. Portland (3.5 hours south of Bar Harbor) has been named the best food city in the US per capita multiple times — a compact harbor city of independent restaurants, James Beard Award-winning chefs, and a specific combination of maritime heritage and creative energy that makes it one of the most visited small cities in New England. The Maine coast between Portland and Bar Harbor — Kennebunkport, Ogunquit, Rockland, Camden — provides some of the most classically beautiful New England coastal scenery in the country. Portland + Acadia Circuit3.5 hours apart — 2–3 nights Portland + 3–4 nights Bar Harbor = definitive Maine trip

Maine has a continental climate with a strong maritime influence — cool summers (22 to 26 degrees Celsius on the coast), cold winters, and spectacular fall foliage (peak mid-October for coastal Maine, slightly earlier in the interior). The prime visiting season is late June through October — summer for hiking and water activities, September through October for fall color, lower crowds, and the finest weather. July and August are peak season with the highest hotel rates and maximum crowds in Bar Harbor. The free Island Explorer shuttle (May 20 through mid-October) provides access throughout the park and Bar Harbor without needing a car.

Bar Harbor is the main gateway town — a village of approximately 5,500 year-round residents on the northeast side of Mount Desert Island that swells to 100,000+ in peak summer with day-tripper and overnight visitors. The Acadia Gateway Center in Trenton (opened fall 2025) provides a park-and-ride lot on the mainland side of the bridge, with free Island Explorer buses to Bar Harbor and the Park Loop Road — dramatically reducing the parking pressure that had become a significant problem in peak season. Cadillac Mountain summit drive requires a timed vehicle reservation during peak season (May through October) — reserve at recreation.gov.

Portland, Maine (the state's largest city) is the finest complement to Acadia — 3.5 hours south by car, with its own distinct character as a compact harbor city of excellent restaurants, craft breweries, the Old Port historic district, and easy access to the southern Maine coast. Many visitors combine 2 to 3 days in Portland with 3 to 4 days in Bar Harbor/Acadia for the definitive Maine circuit.

Top Attractions

Cadillac Mountain (1,530 feet, the highest point on the eastern seaboard north of Rio de Janeiro) is the most iconic Acadia experience — from October through early March, it is one of the first places in the contiguous US to see the sunrise, as the sun rises over the Atlantic horizon before any other high point in the country. The 3.5-mile paved summit road requires a timed vehicle reservation during peak season (reserve at recreation.gov). The view from the summit — Mount Desert Island spread below, Frenchman Bay with its scattering of islands, and the open Atlantic beyond — is the finest coastal panorama available from any point in New England. The sunrise experience (arriving before dawn, watching the sky lighten over the ocean) is one of the finest natural spectacles in the US.

The Carriage Roads are 45 miles of crushed-stone pathways closed to motor vehicles, built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. between 1913 and 1940 — a private gift to the American public that remains one of the finest non-motorized trail systems in the country. The roads cross 17 handcrafted granite arch bridges (each unique, each quarried from local pink granite), and traverse the mountains, forests, and pond shores of Mount Desert Island's interior. Cycling the carriage roads is the most recommended activity in Acadia for visitors of moderate fitness — Acadia Bike in Bar Harbor rents quality bikes, and the entire 45-mile network can be explored over 2 to 3 days. The Jordan Pond House (at the southern end of Jordan Pond, serving popovers and tea on the lawn with Bubble Mountain reflected in the water since 1895) is the essential carriage road lunch stop.

The Park Loop Road is the 27-mile scenic motor road that circles the eastern side of Mount Desert Island, connecting all of Acadia's major coastal features — Sand Beach (the only sandy beach in the park, water temperature averages 55 degrees Fahrenheit even in summer — invigorating rather than warm), Thunder Hole (a narrow chasm where incoming waves compress trapped air and explode upward with a thunderous boom), Otter Cliffs (90-foot granite cliffs rising directly from the Atlantic), and Jordan Pond. The loop takes approximately 2 to 3 hours by car with stops, or can be pedaled in a full day.

Where to Stay

Bar Harbor accommodation ranges from large resort hotels to small inns and B&Bs concentrated in the village. July and August booking requires 3 to 6 months advance planning — the village fills completely. The Bluenose Inn (on a hill above Bar Harbor with the finest panoramic views of Frenchman Bay — the most awarded Bar Harbor property) and the Bar Harbor Inn (directly on the harbor waterfront, most centrally positioned full-service hotel) are the two most celebrated properties.

Southwest Harbor (on the 'Quiet Side' of Mount Desert Island, 30 minutes from Bar Harbor) is increasingly recommended as a less crowded alternative base — closer to the Bass Harbor lighthouse and the quieter western trails of the park, with fewer day-tripper crowds while still accessing all of Acadia by road or bike. The Inn at Southwest is the most acclaimed property there.

Food & Drink

Maine lobster is the state's most internationally recognized food product — the cold, nutrient-rich Gulf of Maine waters produce lobsters of exceptional sweetness and texture. The Maine lobster roll (chilled fresh-picked lobster in a split-top bun with butter or light mayonnaise, no filler, no celery) eaten at a waterfront shack where the lobster boats are visible is the most specifically Maine food experience available. Beal's Lobster Pier in Southwest Harbor (a working pier where you can watch lobstermen unload while eating), Thurston's Lobster Pound in Bernard, and Geddy's in Bar Harbor are the most recommended waterfront lobster experiences.

Portland, Maine's restaurant scene punches far above its size — consistently named one of the best food cities per capita in the US. Eventide Oyster Bar (the brown butter lobster roll — hot, served on a Chinese steamed bun, the most acclaimed single lobster preparation in Maine), Fore Street (wood-fired everything, farm-to-table before the term existed, James Beard Award winner), and Hugo's (the most technically ambitious tasting menu in Portland) are the essential fine dining experiences. The Portland Public Market and the Old Port neighborhood have the highest density of quality eating per block in New England.

Wild Maine Blueberry Pie

Late July–September — smaller, more intense than cultivated, at every Maine bakery and diner

Wild Maine blueberries are the other essential Maine food — smaller, more intensely flavored than cultivated blueberries, available in pies, jams, pancakes, and ice cream throughout the state from late July through September. Maine blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream is the state dessert in everything but official name.

From Boston (Drive)~5 hours — Route 1 coastal scenic, or I-95 to Bangor (faster)
From New York (Drive)~7 hours — popular road trip, stop in Portland (3.5 hrs) en route

Bar Harbor/Hancock County Airport (BHB) on Mount Desert Island is a small airport with very limited seasonal service — primarily small commuter aircraft. Bangor International Airport (BGR) — approximately 1.5 hours north of Bar Harbor — is the most practical fly-in option for Bar Harbor, served by American, Delta, and United from Boston, New York, and other cities. Portland International Jetport (PWM) is the main Maine airport — 3.5 hours south of Bar Harbor, with the most extensive connections including direct flights from Boston (45 minutes), New York, Philadelphia, and seasonal direct flights from other East Coast cities.

Most visitors to Acadia drive — either from Boston (5 hours), New York (7 hours), or from Portland (3.5 hours). The standard approach is Route 1 along the coast from Portland north — the most scenic route, passing through Kennebunkport, Rockland, Camden, and Belfast, with detours to lighthouses and harbors along the way. The more direct I-95 to Bangor then south is faster by 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Once in Bar Harbor and Acadia, the free Island Explorer shuttle (May through mid-October, 8 routes) is the recommended transport — connecting the Acadia Gateway Center in Trenton (where visitors should park), Bar Harbor Village, all major trailheads, and most hotels. Parking inside the park, particularly at popular trailheads, is extremely limited in peak season and the shuttle eliminates the problem entirely.

Practical Info

Classic 7-day Maine itinerary: Days 1–2 Portland (Old Port, Fore Street dinner, Eventide lobster roll, Portland Head Light, Eastern Promenade). Day 3 drive coastal Route 1 north to Bar Harbor (stop in Rockland for the Wyeth collection at the Farnsworth Art Museum, Camden for the harbor). Days 4–6 Acadia (Cadillac Mountain sunrise, carriage road cycling, Park Loop Road, Jordan Pond popovers, Bass Harbor lighthouse). Day 7 drive back via Bangor or direct to Boston/fly out from Bangor.

Acadia parking is a genuine problem in July and August — the new Acadia Gateway Center in Trenton (opened fall 2025) dramatically improves this. Park at the Gateway Center and take the free Island Explorer shuttle for all park activities. Driving your own car into the most popular areas in peak summer is a frustrating experience. The shuttle is genuinely efficient and free.

Book 2 to 3 months ahead for October weekends.
