Antigua and Barbuda is a twin-island nation of approximately 100,000 people in the northern Lesser Antilles — Antigua (108 square miles, capital St John's) is the larger and more developed island, while Barbuda (62 square miles, approximately 1,800 residents) is 27 miles to the north, characterized by its 11-mile pink-sand beach and isolation. The islands are most famous for Antigua's claim of 365 beaches — one for every day of the year — and for Nelson's Dockyard at English Harbour, the only continuously working Georgian-era dockyard in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Antigua and Barbuda celebrated record-breaking visitor arrivals in 2024 with 330,281 stayover visitors and 823,955 cruise passengers, surpassing 2019 pre-pandemic benchmarks. The UK market — always Antigua's most important — grew 4.4% year-on-year in 2025 with visitors staying an average of 12 days. In 2026, Antigua hosts the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting — its largest global gathering ever, welcoming King Charles III and leaders from 56 nations. The Barbuda International Airport reopened in 2024 with LIAT operating regular 25-minute direct flights between the two islands. A new cruise terminal opened in late 2025. Major new hotel projects include Nobu Beach Inn Barbuda, the Residences at Nikki Beach (134 luxury units), and a Marriott Resort at Yepton Beach with overwater villas (2028).

Antigua's year-round event calendar is among the Caribbean's most complete: Sailing Week (April/May), Classic Yacht Regatta (April), Carnival — the Caribbean's Greatest Summer Festival (late July/August), Art Week (November), and monthly themed events. Shirley Heights Lookout above English Harbour hosts a legendary Sunday evening party with steel band, BBQ, and the island's finest sunset view. Start planning at palapavibez.com.

Antigua has a tropical climate — warm year-round (25 to 30 degrees Celsius), with a relatively dry climate compared to other Eastern Caribbean islands (less than 45 inches of annual rainfall). The dry season (December through April) is peak season with the finest beach weather. Sailing Week (late April/early May) is the single most significant annual event. Antigua Carnival (late July through first Tuesday of August) is the most culturally vibrant period. Hurricane season runs June through November.

V.C. Bird International Airport (ANU) is one of the Eastern Caribbean's main hubs — served by American Airlines from Miami and New York, Delta from Atlanta, United from Newark, British Airways from London Gatwick (daily), Virgin Atlantic, Air Canada, and JetBlue. Airlift expanded significantly in 2024. The airport is approximately 20 minutes from the capital St John's and 45 minutes from English Harbour.

Antigua serves as a regional hub for inter-island connections via interCaribbean Airways and LIAT to neighboring islands including Barbuda (25 minutes), St Kitts, Dominica, and others.

Top Attractions

Nelson's Dockyard National Park at English Harbour is Antigua's most significant historical and cultural attraction — a UNESCO World Heritage Site encompassing the only continuously working Georgian-era dockyard in the world, where the British Royal Navy maintained its Eastern Caribbean base from the 1720s through 1889. Horatio Nelson served here as a post captain from 1784 to 1787. The restored stone buildings (boathouse, sail loft, officers' quarters) now house the Dockyard Museum, restaurants, boutiques, and the Caribbean's finest heritage marina — where visiting yachts raft alongside 18th-century stone quays. Shirley Heights Lookout above the dockyard offers the most dramatic view on the island and hosts the most celebrated Sunday evening party in the Caribbean — steel band from 4pm, reggae from 7pm, BBQ, and a sunset over English Harbour and the surrounding hills.

Barbuda is Antigua's quieter sister island and one of the most pristine places remaining in the Caribbean — a coral limestone island 27 miles north with an 11-mile stretch of pink-sand beach (one of the Caribbean's longest continuous beaches), the Codrington Lagoon (home of the largest frigatebird sanctuary in the Western Hemisphere — over 5,000 nesting birds), and almost no crowds. Hurricane Irma devastated Barbuda in 2017 and the island is still rebuilding, but the Barbuda Belle Luxury Beach Hotel (seven beach bungalows, the most acclaimed accommodation) and the main settlement of Codrington have recovered. The Barbuda International Airport reopened in 2024.

Where to Stay

Antigua has a sophisticated hotel landscape — from world-renowned luxury resorts to intimate boutique properties, concentrated on the south coast (English Harbour area), west coast (Five Islands/Galley Bay), and north coast (Dickenson Bay/Jolly Beach). The English Harbour area has the most atmospheric staying options, surrounded by sailing culture and the historic dockyard.

Curtain Bluff (on a dramatic promontory on the south coast — one of the Caribbean's great classic resorts, undergoing a US$40 million redevelopment completing in 2027, with new beachfront villas) and Hermitage Bay (an adults-only boutique resort on a secluded west coast bay, consistently among the most praised in the Eastern Caribbean) are the most acclaimed luxury properties. Carlisle Bay (a sleek, contemporary resort on the south coast with watersports emphasis) and the Verandah Resort & Spa (Dian Bay, the most complete full-service family resort) round out the top tier.

Food & Drink

Antigua's national dish is pepperpot — a hearty stew of mixed meats, okra, and vegetables flavored with ancho chili and local herbs, served with fungee (a cornmeal and okra porridge similar to polenta). Ducana (sweet potato dumplings steamed in banana leaves) and saltfish are the traditional breakfast. Fresh Antiguan black pineapple (the sweetest pineapple variety in the Caribbean, grown in the island's west) is the most specific local product.

The dining scene at English Harbour is the finest in Antigua — The Inn at English Harbour's restaurant, The Pillars at Nelson's Dockyard, and Abracadabra Restaurant are the most acclaimed in the harbor area. St John's has a lively restaurant scene around Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay (the historic waterfront). The 'Limin' Barbecue' culture — outdoor evening BBQs — is a significant social tradition particularly on weekends.
