Lombok has a tropical climate with two seasons. The dry season from April through October is ideal — sunny skies, minimal rainfall, and the best conditions for Mount Rinjani trekking (trails officially open April to November, with May and June offering the sweet spot of perfect weather before peak-season July/August crowds). The wet season from November through March brings heavy afternoon rains — most major treks including Rinjani close, but beaches remain usable and the island turns spectacularly green. The standard 3-day/2-night summit trek starts from either Sembalun (for the summit attempt) or Senaru (for the crater rim and lake), ascending through savanna, montane forest, and volcanic ash to the crater rim at 2,639 meters on day one, descending to Segara Anak crater lake and the hot springs on day two, and returning on day three. The 2am summit push from the crater rim to 3,726 meters (a 1,087-meter ascent on loose volcanic ash in darkness) is the most physically demanding section — rewarded by sunrise over a sea of clouds with the crater lake 600 meters below. The Gili Islands — Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno — are three tiny coral-fringed islands off Lombok's northwest coast, accessible by fast boat from Bangsal harbor or directly from Bali. No motor vehicles are permitted on any of the three islands; transport is by bicycle or horse-drawn cidomo. The islands each have a distinct character: Gili Trawangan is the liveliest (beach bars, sunset views, social atmosphere), Gili Meno is the quietest and most romantic (smallest island, nesting turtles), and Gili Air is balanced between the two. The snorkeling and diving around all three islands is excellent — green sea turtles are reliably encountered within 100 meters of the shore, and the coral health is among the best in the region.

The Gili Islands have the most diverse restaurant scene in the Lombok area — influenced by the international diver/backpacker community, with Italian, Mexican, Japanese, and Indonesian options on all three islands. Getting There
Lombok International Airport (LOP) is the island's main gateway, approximately 40 minutes from Mataram and 1.5 to 2 hours from Kuta Mandalika. From Bali, the fast boat is the most scenic and social option for reaching the Gili Islands directly — boat companies operate from Padang Bai, Sanur, and Serangan in Bali to Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno in approximately 1.5 to 3 hours depending on boat speed. Prices range from approximately $30 to $60. This is the standard route for island-hopping visitors combining Bali and Lombok.
From international points of origin: fly to Denpasar Bali (the main regional hub, with extensive international connections from Asia, Australia, and Europe), then domestic connection to Lombok airport (25 minutes) or fast boat to the Gilis. The Sasak culture of Lombok deserves genuine respect — this is a Muslim-majority island where dress codes in villages and temples are important (shoulders and knees covered), and the communities' relationship with tourism is still in formation. The traditional weaving villages (Sukarara, Sade) offer genuinely excellent handmade textiles; buying directly from artisans funds communities rather than intermediary sellers.
