Overview
Grenada is a three-island state of approximately 124,000 people in the southeastern Caribbean — the main island of Grenada (133 square miles), Carriacou (13 square miles), and Petite Martinique — located 90 miles north of Trinidad and 100 miles southwest of St Vincent. The island is best known as the Spice Isle — the world's second-largest producer of nutmeg after Indonesia, also producing mace, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and turmeric. The scent of nutmeg and cocoa pervades the island's markets, forests, and cooking. Seven chocolate factories and four rum distilleries operate on the island.
Grenada experienced 26 months of consecutive tourism growth by December 2024, with visitor numbers up 17% year-on-year in 2024. The destination entered 2025 with solid momentum and growing international awareness as a boutique Caribbean destination. Delta Air Lines relaunched nonstop service from Atlanta (December 20, 2025, operating daily through April 12, 2026) — a major airlift improvement. Grenada has a tropical climate — warm year-round (25 to 30 degrees Celsius), with a dry season from January through May and a wetter season from June through December. The island sits at the southern edge of the hurricane belt and has historically been less frequently struck by major storms than more northern Caribbean islands. January through April is the finest visiting window — driest, clearest, coolest, peak hotel rates. June through August is the lowest season with the best hotel discounts.
Maurice Bishop International Airport (GND) is Grenada's only commercial airport — approximately 5 minutes from the Grand Anse resort strip and 15 minutes from St George's. Delta relaunched daily nonstop from Atlanta (December 2025). British Airways flies from London Gatwick. American Airlines connects via Miami, and Air Canada from Toronto. The airport's proximity to the main resort area makes it one of the most convenient Caribbean airports.
Grenada uses the Eastern Caribbean dollar (XCD) pegged to USD at EC$2.70 = US$1.00. US dollars are widely accepted at tourist establishments. The island is moderately priced for the Caribbean — cheaper than St Barts or Anguilla, more expensive than the Dominican Republic. A car rental (drive on the left) is the most practical way to explore the island beyond the Grand Anse strip.

The Seven Sisters Waterfall in the Grand Etang National Park and Forest Reserve is the finest hike on the island — a 1.5 to 2-hour trail through lush rainforest to a series of seven connected waterfalls with a deep natural swimming pool at the base. River Antoine Rum Distillery (the oldest functioning water-powered rum distillery in the Caribbean, still using an 18th-century water wheel and grinding cane with original stone rollers) is the most historically significant single attraction on the island.

Food & Drink
Oil down is Grenada's national dish — a one-pot meal of breadfruit, salted meat (pork or chicken), callaloo (leafy greens), and coconut milk, cooked slowly until the coconut milk has been fully absorbed and only the oil remains in the pot. The result is a rich, fragrant stew that requires hours of cooking and is most commonly prepared for Sunday gatherings and celebrations. It is the most specifically Grenadian food experience available.
Grenada's spice identity extends through its entire food culture — nutmeg is used in both savory cooking and in Grenada's famous rum punch (Angostura bitters, nutmeg, lime, sugar, rum). The Grenada Chocolate Company, Tri-Island Chocolate, and Belmont Estate produce some of the finest bean-to-bar chocolate in the Caribbean. Delta Air Lines relaunched nonstop service from Atlanta (December 20, 2025, daily through April 12, 2026). British Airways operates from London Gatwick. American Airlines connects via Miami or San Juan. Air Canada from Toronto. JetBlue from New York. The airport is small and efficient.
From the UK, British Airways is the most direct option (approximately 9 hours from Gatwick). From the US, the new Delta Atlanta nonstop (approximately 4.5 hours) is the most significant recent addition. Caribbean Express and regional carriers connect Grenada to neighboring islands including St Vincent, Barbados, and Trinidad.
For Carriacou and Petite Martinique (Grenada's sister islands): Osprey Lines ferry operates from the Carenage in St George's to Hillsborough, Carriacou (approximately 90 minutes). Internal flights on small aircraft are also available.
